What is SLOP?

Slop emerged as a descriptor for the flood of AI-generated and low-effort content that began dominating social media in 2024. The term draws on the literal meaning of slop — unappetizing, mixed-up food — to describe content that is hastily produced, algorithmically amplified, and consumed without discrimination. It became closely associated with the Italian brainrot wave.

Slop has become an essential part of the brainrot vocabulary, often used in the phrase 'Slop Index' to rate the absurdity of content. The brainrot community's relationship with slop is complex — they simultaneously critique it and eagerly consume it, embodying the ironic appreciation that defines internet culture.
